Blues in Britain stonking “Badder to the Bone” review

“Two years on from the excellent “Black Crow Moan.” Eliza Neals follow-up is another slab of stonking blues-rock, this time aided and abetted by ‘Supersonic Blues Machine’ guitarist, Lance Lopez and Detroit Hall Of Famer (US ROCK N ROLL Hall Of Famer is correct) Billy ‘JC’ Davis, with some seriously Southern Hammond and piano by Peter Keys (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and John Galvin (Molly Hatchet) respectively. Neals has a track-record second to none (she’s performed with or open for Mike Zito, Tommy Castro, Walter Trout, Popa Chubby, Albert Castiglia, Victor Wainwright, King Solomon Hicks, Joe Louis Walker and more), and her pedigree shines brightly on cuts such as “United We Stand” the topical “Lockdown Love” and the two-parter “Queen of the Nile” (which slow burns then explodes with Lopez’s searing solo, before a closing, reprised version ‘II”).
“King Kong” is fun and games, driven on chugging guitars and Eliza’s effortless vocal heading out on the highway (Stacie Collins would do this one well methinks) and the slide-driven, salacious “Fueling Me Up,” a great tune. Neals has a Joplinesque rasp that is particularly evident on the soulful piano and keys ballad “Heathen” (which contains the brilliantly humorous chorus, “you’se a heathen, I wish you’d stop breathin”). The choice of covering Steve Winwood’s elemental “Can’t Find My Way Home” proves inspired, allowing Lopez free rein once again. All good stuff.” By Leon Blanc

A place where almost all the music lovers know every word to your songs, have studied the liners words and know the songwriters.
